About Nevada NGSE

Transitioning science to the next generation for ALL students…

Welcome to the Nevada Next Generation Science Education Website (NV NGSE). The purpose of this site is to provide pertinent and timely information related to the changing landscape of science education at the national level and its implications for science education in Nevada. Our goal is to centralize news, research, best practices, and resources being created across the country that will have an impact on all Nevada stakeholders. Whether you are a classroom teacher, parent, student, professor, or professional development trainer there will be news and resources posted here to help you obtain current material related to science education. This material will also be relevant for leaders in business, industry, and informal education, and those with leadership roles in local and state government and policy-making positions.

Based upon a Framework for K-12 Science Education developed by the National Research Council (see external link), the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) will provide a set of science standards that are rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner, across all disciplines and grades, in order to provide all students an internationally-benchmarked science education. These standards promote students researching problems, predicting outcomes, analyzing results and making conclusions, with the understanding that this is only the beginning of the life-long science learning process. Once finalized, each state will determine whether to adopt the NGSS, much in the same way they did for the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Achieve, a non-profit education reform organization that helps states raise academic standards and graduation requirements, manages a website devoted to communicating the development and publishing of the NGSS (see external link).

Through leadership from the Nevada Department of Education, both a national and in-state committee of the Nevada Next Generation Implementation Team (NGIT) has been established. The national committee networks with leadership across the country to assemble, organize, and make resources available to bring back to the in-state committee to facilitate the availability of clear messaging to all invested stakeholders within our state. The Nevada NGIT national committee is comprised of five members:

  • Bret Sibley, Networking Group Lead and NV NGSE Website Group Lead, Southern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program (SNRPDP)
  • Kristoffer Carroll, Curriculum Group Lead, Clark County School District, Virtual High School
  • Valerie Burns, Professional Development Group Lead, Northern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program (NNRPDP)
  • Lou Loftin, Vision Presentation Group Lead, North West Regional Professional Development Program (NWRPDP)
  • André DeLeón, Adoption Group Lead, Nevada Department of Education

The complete list of Nevada National and In-State NGIT committee members along with current contact information is available in the Internal Links section.

We would like to recognize the Southern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program (SNRPDP) for its financial and personnel support for the creation and maintenance of this website, and for its continued leadership in providing quality professional development that promotes increased student achievement (see external link).
